What is a GBGV?

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is an equal opportunity thief!  They’ll steal your heart as fast as they’ll steal a treat right off your countertop.  Luckily the are cute!

New to the AKC Hound Group in January 2018, America’s imported scruffy sweatheart is a happy hound with a playful, loving spirit and keen wit!  This noble and nimble breed is typically a social butterfly who delights in all two and four legged friends he meets.

That being said, this is a strong willed and powerful hound, so is not the breed for everyone.  While they do make a wonderful family dog, they do have some specific needs.  Basic Obedience is a must for this smart and sometimes stubborn hound!  In addition, secure fencing is also crucial as GBGV are bred to follow their nose where ever it leads them!

Why Ethos GBGV?

We chose the name Ethos many years ago because we wanted to be sure it was obvious that personal integrity is a priority in our lives whether we are breeding, showing or just sharing our dogs with people where ever we go.

We believe our dogs have the building blocks for success from birth.  A strong foundation built off dogs with correct breed type and temperament is our starting point.  When Ethos puppies are born, we begin their lives with Early Neuro Stimulation to promote stronger mental and physical health.  We provide age appropriate Environmental Enrichment experiences and socialization opportunities for our puppies and adult dogs which leads to confident, balanced four legged family members.

We feel health testing is paramount to any successful breeding program and all our breeding stock gets evaluated for hip dysplasia and heritable eye disorders.  All our puppies go to their forever homes with a written two year guarantee against heritable hip and eye related issues.  We also provide health certificates and appropriate vaccinations, dewormings and microchipping.

Are GBGV healthy dogs?

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is a robust breed which has been based on stock long bred to be  rustic, hard working and generally long lived.  While no breed is without health issues, GBGV are quite hardy.

Routine at home examination and grooming on a weekly basis will keep coat maintenance quite manageable and allow you to notice any changes of body condition like weight loss, cuts, inflammation, matting,  etc.

The trademark long ear leathers that are so endearing can allow moisture to get trapped in the ear canal.  Good diet and regular cleaning will usually keep yeast and bacteria from becoming an issue.

The rough coat of the GBGV should be quite manageable with weekly brushing, occasional bathing and hand stripping.  This coat is not meant to be shaved/clippered.  In fact, the texture will lose it’s harshness if you do!

Life is GRAND!

In the dog show world, success is often measured by rankings and number of wins.  Conformation shows are designed to evaluate breeding stock, as compared to the ideal dog of a given breed.

We do enjoy conformation shows and are successful in that realm.  Overall, for me, it is my love of the versatility of this breed that I try to keep in mind as we bring our breeding program forward and continue to improve our bloodlines.

The GBGV is first and foremost a scent hound.  Their instinct to track and trail is very keen!  Watching and hearing the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen work as they were bred to is very exciting and rewarding.  Seeing that innate drive in action is simply amazing!  These are working hunters and are at their happiest when they get opportunities to follow their scenting instincts!

We seek out many ways to share our wonderful hounds with dog lovers as we continue to introduce the GBGV to America and beyond.

The Grand Basset Griffon is versatile and is actively working on various Scent Work activities, Hunt Tests, Tracking, Obedience, Rally, CAT and Fast CAT events, Therapy work and more!  Watch for Ethos bred hounds around the country as we continue to support and promote our unique ,intelligent and loving hounds.
